북한 지역의 서원·사우 현황과 숭양서원의 위상

Status of Seowon·Sawoo and Position of Soongyang Seowon during the Late Joseon in the North Korean Region

논문은 현재의 북한지역에 건립되었던 조선시대 서원·사우의 현황을 파악하고 나아가 숭양서원이 가지는 위상을 살펴본 것이다. 북한지역은 하삼도에 비해 사족들의 수가 적고 학문적 수준도 낮았으며 현달한 인사가 없었다. 따라서 서원·사우도 하삼도에 비하여 수적으로는 열세였으며, 서원의 제향인은 북한지역 출신 인사보다는 문묘종사대현, 지방관, 중국 성현의 비중이 높았다. 그러나 사액 비율은 하삼도에 비하여 매우 높았는데, 그것은 이 지역에 대한 조정의 관심이 컸음을 방증한다. 특히 개성의 숭양서원은 국왕의 관심이 지대하였다. 실제 건립 이래로 모두 9차례의 치제가 확인되며, 왕명으로 어제 어필을 판각하여 게시한 것과 서적이 반사된 것 등은 모두 국왕의 관심을 반영한 것이다. 아울러 이러한 관심은 숭양서원의 위상과도 직결되어, 위상을 제고(提高)하는 효과가 있었다. 그 결과 1871년(고종 8) 대원군의 원사철폐 때에는 정몽주를 제향하는 대표 서원이 충렬서원에서 숭양서원으로 령이 번복되었다. 이후 숭양서원은 향교와 더불어 한말에 개성의 교육과 향론을 주도하는 위치에 있었다.

The controlling classes on rural areas of the North Korean region had a small number of its kind, lower than the three provinces in lower region of the academic level and no person attaining such distinction. Thus, there was interior number of Seowon·Sawoo compared to the three provinces in lower region, and the local personnel of Seowon also had higher ratio of Munmyojongsadaehyeon, local government officials and wise men of China compared to persons from the North Korean region. However, the bestowment of a title board ratio is much higher than the three provinces in lower region, but it proves that the interest of the government on this area was great. In particular, Soongyang Seowon of Gaeseong by the kingship was enormous. In fact, since its establishment, there were a total of 9 ceremonies confirmed, and it reflects the interests of kingship under its decree to inscribe and post on the royal tablet produced by royal family and reflection of publications. In addition, this type of interest is directly linked to the position of Soongyang Seowon with an effect to enhance the status. As a result, it was recognized as the representative Seowon to enshrine Jeong Mong-joo that the decree to repeal Seowon was overturned in 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong). Thereafter, Soongyang Seowon was in a position to lead the education and local opinion of Gaeseong at the end of the Joseon Dynasty together with local schools.
