고려 후기 포은(圃隱)의 정치적 입장과 그 의미

Political Position and its Meaning of Po-eun(圃隱) in the Late Goryeo Dynasty

포은 정몽주에 대한 많은 연구가 이루어졌고, 그의 정치 활동에 대해서도 적지 않은 연구 성과가 나왔다. 그러나 연구자들이 명쾌하지 답하지 못하는 몇 가지 사안들이 있다. 첫째, 정몽주는 왜 우왕 대에 친명 일변도의 정책을 선택하였는가 하는 점이고, 둘째, 그는 왜 우창비왕설을 거부하지 않고 자신이 섬겼던 우왕과 창왕을 죽음에 이르게 하였을까 하는 점이며, 셋째, 왜 마지막에 이성계와 정치적 노선을 달리하였고, 나아가 이성계 일파가 자신을 살해하려고 하는 것을 알면서도 그 길로 나아갔는가 하는 점이다. 이 글에서는 위 3가지 사안들에 대해서 고찰하여 정몽주가 어떤 정치적 입장을 취하였고, 그가 그런 입장을 택한 이유, 그리고 그것이 가진 역사적 의미는 어떤 것이었는지를 분석해 보았다. 그 결과, 첫째, 정몽주와 신진사류가 우왕 대에 친명 일변도의 정책을 선택한 것은 정몽주 자신의 명 사신 경험 및 남경 체류 경험에 근거해서 결정한 것이라고 보았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그 결정은 명과 북원이라는 두 강대국 사이에 처한 고려가 펼쳐야 하는 외교 정책의 현실을 냉정하게 직시하지 못한 측면이 있었다고 판단하였다. 둘째, 우왕과 창왕을 폐위한 것에 대하여 정몽주가 취했던 입장은 관련 사건의 전개가 너무 빠르게 진행되었던 점, 그리고 이성계 일파가 목적을 위해 무장세력은 물론 이색 등 자신과 가까운 신진사류 일부까지도 숙청하는 것을 보고 후일을 도모하려고 한 것이라고 보았다. 곧 당장 막을 수는 없으니 일단 안심시키고 힘을 키워 후일 목적을 달성하기 위한 것이었다고 해석하였다. 셋째, 공양왕 옹립까지는 뜻을 같이 했던 이성계와 정치적 노선을 달리한 정몽주가 이성계 일파가 자신을 살해하려고 하는 것을 알면서도 그 길로 나아갔는가 하는 것에 대한 그의 입장은 역성혁명을 추진하는 것에 대해 뒤늦게 깨달았고, 그것을 도저히 막을 수 없다는 판단 아래에서 스스로 그 길을 선택한 것으로 보았다.

Many studies have been done on Po-eun Jeong Mong-ju, and not a few have been done on his political activities. However, there are several issues that researchers do not answer with clarity. First, why did he choose a policy that was only intimate with the Ming Dynasty during the reign of King Wu? Second, why did Jeong Mong-ju not reject the ‘U and Chang bi Wang theory (禑昌非王說: the assertion that King U and King Chang are not the true king because they do not have Wang s surname) and bring the King U and King Chang who he had served, to death? Third, why did he go that way at the end, even though he knew Yi Seong-gye was trying to kill himself on a different political line from Yi Seong-gye? This article examines the above three issues and analyzes what political position Jeong Mong-ju took, why he chose it, and what its historical meaning was. As a result, first, Jeong Mong-ju and new scholar-officials(新進士類) chose a policy that was only intimate with the Ming Dynasty during the reign of King U, based on his own envoys experience of the Ming Dynasty and his experience of staying in Nanjing. Nevertheless, the decision was seen as a failure to face the reality of foreign policy that the consideration faced between the two superpowers-the Ming Dynasty and the Mongol Northern Yuan(北元)-coldly. Second, The reason why Jeong Mong-ju did not oppose the dethronement of King U and King Chang was that he designed the future, after he saw a rapid progress and he experienced that Yi Seong-gye’s faction purged not only Military Party(武將勢力) but also some of new scholar-officials. It cannot be stopped right away, so it is believed that it was aimed at achieving future goals by reassuring them and strengthening their strength. Jeong Mong-ju went that way even though he knew Yi Seong-gye’s faction was trying to kill him. The reason was that he was late in realizing that the Yi Seong-gye’s faction was pushing forward with Yoksong revolution(易姓革命: the dynastic replacement revolution) and judged that it was simply impossible to prevent it.
