The purpose of this study was to provide basic information useful for the development of parent education materials that would help get a better understanding of parents’ self-regulation. For this purpose, the study explored ways to reduce children’s problematic behaviors and improve their mental health by examining how those problematic behaviors or mental health varies depending on parents’ level of self-regulation and determining how much the degree of agreement in that level between parents is related to either of the two variables on part of children. Specifically, participants of this research were children who were attending early childhood education institutions located in Busan Metropolitan City and their parents, respectively 259 in number. And then, the research conducted a questionnaire survey of all the participants. Through this move, their responses to items asking about parents’ self-regulation, children’s problematic behavior and their mental health were obtained, and then analyzed here. Findings of this study can be summarized as follows. Parents’ higher level of self-regulation contributes to children’s fewer behavioral problems and better mental health. Depending on the degree of agreement in the level of self-regulation between parents, that is, whether both parents belong to the high or low group of that level, there are significant differences among children in terms of problematic behavior and mental health. These findings suggest that children’s externalizing problematic behaviors as well as internalized ones are directly influenced by parents’ level of self-regulation.
