Meaning of Negativity in Moral Education: Spinoza’s Perspective

본 연구의 목적은 소크라테스가 자신의 대화법[엘렝코스]을 통해 부각시킨 도덕 교육에서의 부정(negativity)의 의미를 스피노자의 윤리학에 비추어 분석하는 데에 있다. 소크라테스의 부정이 ‘신을 믿지 않는다’는 그의 죄목과 무관한 것일 수 없다 고 볼 때, 스피노자의 윤리학은 특별한 관심의 대상이 된다. 스피노자는 윤리학적 논의를 통해 신에 대한 고유한 관점을 바탕으로 인간이 편견으로서의 도덕개념을 지닐수밖에 없다는 것과 그 편견으로서의 도덕개념을 제거 또는 부정해야 한다는 것을 동시에 설명한다. 스피노자의 관점에서 볼 때, 부정은 절대적 무(nothing)가 아니라 직관지로 나아가기 위한 통로이다. 직관지는 신과 분리 불가능한 존재인 인간이 지니는 신적인 인식이다. 그 신적인 인식은 인간에게 영원으로서 주어지는 인식이라는 점에서, 인간이 본래 이 세계에 대한 참된 관념을 지닌 존재라는 것을 보여주는 개념이다. 이렇게 볼 때, 부정은 인간이 본래의 자기 자신에게로 복귀하는 통로이며, 부정을 본질로 하는 도덕교육은 인간이 우주를 품고 있는 이른바 우주적 존재로서의 자기 자신을 이해하는 과정으로 규정될 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of negativity in the moral education that Socrates has been accused of ‘corruption of the young’ in the light of the ethics of Spinoza. The reason why Spinoza’s ethics is particularly focused on this study is that it is a good example when trying to understand the meaning of negativity in relation to that Socrates was accused of ‘impiety’. Through ethical discussions, Spinoza understands God from a different point of view than usual, and based on such an understanding, he simultaneously explains that human beings are bound to have a moral concept as a prejudice and that they should be eliminated or negated. For Spinoza, this negativity is not an absolute nothingness, but the intuition[scientia intuitiva]. Intuition is the cognition of God inherent as eternity to human being, who is inseparable from God. In this respect, intuition is a concept that indicates that humans already have a true idea of the world, that is, the cosmos. In this light, negativity is the path through which man returns to his own self, and moral education based on negativity can be defined as the process by which man understands himself as a cosmic being.
