많은 사람들이 노래운동의 역사를 되짚어보고자 할 때 대부분 김민기와 김호철을 기억하기 마련이다. 하지만 그들 사이에는 상당한 간극이 존재한다. 시기로 치자면 대략 1980년대 벽두부터 1987년에 이르는 기간이며 운동의 역사로 치자면 가장 강렬했고 치열했던 시기에 해당한다. 이 시기는 대개 광장에서 수많은 일들이 일어났던 시절로, 김민기는 <아침이슬>로만 존재했고 김호철은 아직 무대의 전면에 나서기 이전이다. 이 시기에도 노래운동이 대중운동에 끼쳤던 영향력은 상당했다. 하지만 1970년대의 노래운동이 김민기로 표상되고 1989년 이후의 그것이 김호철로 표상되는 데에 비해, 1980년대의 노래운동을 이끌었던 표상은 잘 드러나지 않는다. 이 글에서 이야기하려는 작곡가 문승현은 바로 그 자리를 조용히 지키고 이끈 사람이다. 그의 행보는 1980년대 노래운동에서 가장 큰 궤적을 그렸으며, 그의 지향과 취향은 전체 운동진영의 음악적 지향과 취향이 되기도 했다. 그의 미적 지향과 운동적 행보를 이해하는 것은 1980년대 노래운동의 양상을 이해하는 일의 기초이자 핵심이다.

Most people always say about Kim Min-gi and Kim Ho-chul when they want to speak about the history of Korean protest song. But there is a deep valley between two men. The gap is the time from early 1980’s to about 1987 and was the hottest time of demonstration for democracy in Korea. So many acts and events were happened in the street and plaza. At that time, people on the street met Kim Min-gi only as ‘Achimiseul ( 아침이슬 ) ’ and Kim Ho-chul had not been there, yet. The influence of protest song to the social movement was great in that period, too. But people on the street didn’t know about the leader of protest song in 1980’s and it was very different case from another period, before 1980 of Kim Min-gi and after 1987 of Kim Ho-chul. In this paper, I want to describe the comparatively unknown leader Moon Seung-hyun who led the 1980 s protest song movement in the field. His creating and acting was the biggest trace of 1980’s protest song and his musical taste became the representative taste of activists. If we understand his musical aim and social activity, we can get the basic idea about 1980’s protest song movement.
