한국어교육을 위한 <단군신화>의 교육 방향

Teaching Korean Language and Culture Using the Myth of Dangun

본 논문은 한국어 교재에 수록된 <단군신화>의 문제점을 살펴보고 <단군신화>의 한국어 교육 방향을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. <단군신화>는 한국의 시원을 설명하는 건국신화로서 한국인이라면 누구나 알고 있는 이야기이다. 한국어 교재에도 문학텍스트 수용 비중 가장 높은 빈도를 보이고 있는 텍스트이다. 이는 <단군신화>가 한국인에게 중요한 의미를 가진 신화이기 때문이기도 하지만, 언어와 문화교육을 함께 할 수 있는 구비문학텍스트라는 점에서 유용하기 때문이다. 그러나 교재의 상당수가 <단군신화>가 가진 구비문학의 한국어교육적 장점을 충분히 활용하고 있지 못하고 있다. 그 이유는 역사와 신화의 경계에서 <단군신화>를 해석하는 일정한 교육적 관점을 가지지 못한 채, 삼국유사에 기록된 문어적 요약 서사방식 그대로를 텍스트로 삼고 있고 때문이다. <단군신화>는 구비문학텍스트의 장점을 활용해야 언어와 문화 교육을 보다 효율적으로 실현할 수 있다. 그러기 위해서는 우선 한국어교재의 <단군신화> 텍스트가 현대인의 구연성에 맞게 재화되어야 한다. 이 때 언어교육의 측면에서는 스토리텔링을 활용할 수 있는 입체적인 텍스트로 구성하여 의사소통 중심의 학습활동을 가능케 해야 하고, 문화교육의 측면에서는 문화교수 항목을 단계별로 배치하여 체계적인 문화교육을 실행할 수 있는 텍스트가 되어야 한다. 무엇보다 <단군신화>는 역사가 아니라 이야기의 문학적 독자성을 확보함으로써 심미적 체험과 상상력을 펼칠 수 있는 문학텍스트로 재구성되어야 한다.

The Myth of Dangun is a founding myth of Korea, which is very well known to Korean people. It is numbered as the most frequently printed literary text in Korean language textbooks. This is not only because Dangun Myth is a very significant myth for Korean people, but also because it is considered as a practical oral literary text for teaching Korean language and culture at the same time. But in reality, a majority of textbooks have failed to activate the myth’s potential strength as an oral literature. The reason of the failure comes from the absence of clear educational perspectives to the Dangun text, which seems to be overshadowed by its historical or mythical perspectives. Since many Korean textbooks simply borrow a descriptive literary form of Dangun Myth written in Samgukyusa and purely display it, the beneficial features of the text as an oral literature, such as dynamic exchange of communication skills or active transmitting of cultural knowledge, rarely occur in the language classrooms. In order to use the Myth of Dangun efficiently in language and culture education, the myth in the Korean textbooks needs to be first retelling in contemporary colloquial Korean language. For the purpose of language education, the new text should be formulated for the language learners to practice dynamic communication-centered activities through storytelling method. For the purpose of culture education, cultural elements should be systematically arranged and inserted step by step within the text. Rather than approving the Myth of Dangun only as a historical text, we need to acknowledge its role as an oral literary text and retelling it so as to help the Korean language learners’ aesthetic experience and their imagination.
