<춘향전>의 팔선녀 수용과 그 의미

Acceptance aspects and the meaning of Eight angels in <Chunhyangjeon>

이 논문은 다수의 이본 자료를 바탕으로, <춘향전>에 나타난 팔선녀의 수용 양상과 거기에 담긴 의미를 살핀 것이다. <춘향전>에서 팔선녀는 조선 후기의 관습적 표현인 ‘춘풍석교 희롱’ 내용 외에도 춘향의 자태나 이도령과의 사랑을 비유적으로 표현하기 위한 우리식 전고로 빈번하게 활용되고 있다. 이를 통해 당시 대중에게 <구운몽>의 팔선녀는 우리의 전형적인 절색 선녀로, 팔선녀와 성진의 사랑은 우리의 대표적인 애정고사로 폭넓게 인식되었음을 알 수 있다. 또한 <춘향전>에서 팔선녀는 기생의 묘사나 기생의 이름에 활용되고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 기생들이 화려하게 분장한 색주가 여인의 형상으로 그려지기도 한다. 이러한 기생의 팔선녀화는 조선 후기에 팔선녀가 기생으로까지 통속화되었던 상황을 반영한 결과다. 한편 <춘향전>에는 <구운몽>의 팔부인 가운데 계섬월이 다수 수용되고 있다. 이는 기녀이면서도 절개를 지키기 위해 갖은 고초를 겪은 계섬월을 춘향과 동일화한 <춘향전> 향유층의 인식이 반영된 결과라 보아진다. 이로 인해 <춘향전>에서 계섬월은 팔부인 중 양소유의 대표적인 연인으로 자주 수용되는데, 여기에는 양소유의 처첩 가운데 계섬월이 가장 사랑 받는 여인이길 바라는 <춘향전> 향유층의 기대 심리가 내재되어 있다 하겠다.

This study examined acceptance aspects and the meaning of Eight angels in <Chunhyangjeon>. Eight angels are accepted as a Korean authentic precedents to describe Chunhyang’s figure and the love with Lee Mong-ryong in <Chunhyanjeon>. This shows that Eight angels in <Kuunmong> are counted for typical taoist fairy and the love between Seong-jin and Eight angels is considered as our classic love story at that time. Eight angels in <Chunhyangjeon> are used as some names of Kisaeng or its description. Eight angles are accepted as a splendidly dressed up existence in <Chunhyangjeon> as well. Its specular change is the result of situations in the late of Chosun Dinasty that Eight angels are downgraded as Kisaeng. Gye Seom-wol is accepted frequently in <Chunhyangjeon>. It reflects the awareness of readers of <Chunhyangjeon> that identifies Chunhyang with Gye Seom-wol. In this connection Gye Seom-wol is often accepted as a lover of Yang So-yu. It is also included some reader’s expectations that Gye Seom-wol would be the most loved woman from Yang So-yu.
