Inequality and Economic Development

본 연구는 경제발전론의 관점에서, 최근 급속히 발전되고 있는 불평등에 관한 여러 경제학 연구들을 소개하고 평가하며 앞으로의 연구 방향을 제시한다. 이 연구는 먼저 불평등의 다양한 차원에 관해 살펴보고 진정한 발전에 불평등이 어떤 의미를 지니는지 논의한다. 또한 쿠즈네츠 곡선과 불평등이 성장에 미치는 영향 등 불평등과 경제성장 사이에 나타날 수 있는 복잡한 상호관계를 검토한다. 그리고 이 연구는 불평등이 제도와 혁신 등 경제성장의 근본요인에 미치는 영향에 관해 기존 연구들의 논의를 발전시키고 새로운 실증연구 결과를 제시한다. 마지막으로 결론에서는 불평등과 경제발전에 관한 이러한 논의가 한국에 주는 시사점을 제시한다. 이 연구는 불평등이 지속적인 경제성장과 번영에 악영향을 미칠 가능성이 크며, 한국에서도 다양한 자료들에 기초하여 불평등의 현실에 관한 연구가 발전되어야 한다고 주장한다.

This paper surveys many studies about inequality in economics that have been developed rapidly in the recent period from the perspective of economic development. It first examines diverse dimensions of inequality and discusses the implications of inequality to real development. Second, it studies the complex interrelationship between inequality and economic growth including the Kuznets curve and the negative effects of inequality on growth. Finally, it develops the current study about the impact of inequality on institutions as a fundamental determinant of growth, and also presents an empirical result about the inequality-innovation nexus. The conclusion discusses implications of these studies to Korea. This study argues that inequality could affect sustainable economic growth and prosperity negatively, and thus more research about the reality and changes in inequality using new data should be developed in Korea.
