English language education and admission policy of foreign language high schools

The aim of this research is to examine the problems with English language education of foreign language high schools in Korea and then to propose alternatives for the foreign language high school admission policy. Although foreign language high schools have developed as a prestigious educational institution, they accompanied the problem of proliferation of Hagwon , which is the private educational institution in Korean society. To solve this problem, foreign language high schools implemented the new admission policy starting from the year 201l. The new policy is to select students who are habituated to self-directed learning , evaluating students based solely on their middle school academic reports in English subjects. To serve the goal of examining the validity of evaluating students school academic records and the current condition regarding English language education, the survey was carried out for the analysis of foreign language high schools present situation. The survey shows that the student screening system based on self-directed learning ability does not guarantee the students leveled language proficiency, which may encourage students who lag behind to depend on Hagwon , the private educational institution. This suggests that change be made and there be a new evaluating selection standard directed and constructed by foreign language high schools.
