  • 7

This study is a comparative analysis of the usefulness of the five speaking tests that are most commonly used in Korea. The study examined the specific characteristics of five major standardized oral proficiency tests: Oral Proficiency Interview-computer (OPIc), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test of English Proficiency (TEPS), iBT TOEFL, and Test of English for International Communication (New TOEIC) in terms of test method facets, and usefulness. The study illuminates their differences and similarities for the purpose of investigating interchangeability among the five speaking tests. By means of this analysis, the testing principles of the five oral proficiency tests were uncovered through a process of reverse engineering (RE).
