『和英語林集成』의 漢字接尾辭

A Study on the Kanji Suffixes in Waei gorin shūsei (和英語林集成)

本研究では、近代日本の代表的な和英辞書『和英語林集成』(Hepburn, 平凡)に載っている三字漢字表記語(1104)を対象にし、それに活用された漢字接尾辭の種類、使用頻度、その活用における特徴などについて分析した。 『和英語林集成』(3版)には、225種の漢字接尾辞が三字漢字表記語(877) に活用されている。225種の漢字接尾辞のうち、「-家」「-者」「-人」など人をあらわすものは高い使用頻度を占めている。また、西洋からの新しい学問(「-学」「-論」)や事物をあらわすためのもの(「-機」「-省」「-党」)が目立つ。その他、使用頻度は低いが「-鏡」「-膜」など近代の専門用語に使い始められるものも注目に値する。 本研究は、同一の二字漢字と結合する漢字接尾辞の交替現象など幅広い調査を行い、近代から現代に至る漢字接尾辞の交替現象およびその特徴を明らかにしようとする研究の出発点だと言える。今後、英和·和英の対訳辞書を用いて近代日本語における漢字接尾辞の特徴を研究するとともに近世後期以降の中国と韓国との交流による相互の影響関係などに関しても研究を進めていきたい。

In this study, I analyzed the type, the frequency of use, and the characteristics of the Kanji suffixes used in the three-character Kanji notation words in the typical Japanese-English dictionary 『和英語林集成』(Hepburn, 平凡) in modern Japan. In 『和英語林集成』, 225 kinds of Kanji suffixes are used for three-character Kanji notations. In the 225 kanji suffixes, those that represent people, such as “-家 ”, “-人”, and “-者”, show a high frequency of use. Also, new academics from the West (“-學”, “-論”) and things to express cultural objects (“-機”, “-省”, “-黨”) stand out. It is also worth noting those which are less frequently used but can be used in modern technical terms such as “-鏡” and “-膜”. This research is a starting point for research to clarify the characteristics of Chinese character suffix replacement from 1800s to 1900s by conducting a wide range of research including the replacement phenomenon of Chinese character suffixes combined with the same two-character Kanji. In the future, I would like to study the characteristics of kanji suffixes in modern Japanese using English-Japanese and Japanese-English bilingual dictionaries, as well as uncovering the mutual effects of exchanges between China and Korea since the late modern period.
