Convergence Education between English Literature and Business Management for the 21st Century

  • 71

This study is designed to investigate the possibility of convergence education between English literature and business management. Both domains require breaking status quo, having new insights and a sympathetic understanding of the Other. Both glorify the power of picturing a new future and creating it rather than being restricted by the fixed formulas of the past. Both need to educate attentiveness to diversity, open-mindedness, and heightened receptivity. Particularly in this era of great turbulence, we need to educate students of both fields to be more comfortable with mystery, uncertainty, and doubt. As an example of a multidisciplinary approach to English literature, this paper explores some advantages in adopting Keats’s odes and negative capacity theory for business school students at an undergraduate level. Accepting the actual vastness and complexity of experience without reductionism is crucial in overcoming myopia. To tolerate diversity and contradictions empowers students to generate multiple meanings of text in a constant process of interpreting and learning. Both business and English literature education require the fostering of students’ imaginations to create something new in the 4th industrial revolution. Even in the age of big-data revolution, we need to preserve intuitive knowledge instead of being totally caught in the web of Taylorian scientific management. Literature offers great wisdom of embracing the tragic realities of life, sympathetic identification, and the value of intensity in life and art. An education of literature, in this context, needs to focus upon what art does in our actual life-experience and can do in the future rather than being trapped in the well-wrought urn of the past.
