이 논문은 이태준의 소설 ｢성모｣의 서사가 어떻게 형성되는지를 다음 두 가지에 주목하여 살펴본 것이다. 첫째, ｢성모｣가 모델소설로서의 가능성이 있다는 점이다. 소설 속 박정현의 모델이 화가 김주경일 가능성에 대한 추론이다. 김주경은 실제로 녹향회에 작품 ｢나체습작｣을 출품한 바 있는데, 소설 속 화가 박정현의 그림 ｢희망｣이 이 작품일 가능성을 규명하였다. 순모의 삶의 경로와도 관계되는 작품이라는 점, 작가가 표출하고자 했던 주제와 닿아 있다는 점에서 중요하다. 둘째, 엘렌 케이와 ｢성모｣ 서사 형성과의 관계에 대해 규명해 보았다. 엘렌 케이의 자유연애론에서의 영육일치의 내용이 순모와 상철의 연애와 이후 행보에 끼친 영향, 소설 속 상철과 순모 어머니, 아버지, 오빠가 순모의 사생아 철진을 키우는 데 적극적으로 협조하며 모성을 보호해나가는 과정 등은 작가 이태준이 엘렌 케이의 이론을 순모의 서사로 활용했음을 보여주고 있다. ｢성모｣는 임신 출산을 전후한 여성의 번민, 『신여성』 편집진들의 모성담론 등 1920년대 초반의 한국 여성 사회 정황을 반영하면서, 순모의 삶의 방향을 설정하고 있다.
This paper takes note of the following two things how the narrative of LEE Tae-jun’s novel Great Mother was formed. First, there is a possibility that Great Mother is a model novel. I come to conclude that the model of PARK Jeong-hyun in the novel would be KIM Joo-kyung, the painter. PARK’s painting “Hope” might had been “Nude Study” which KIM Joo-kyung submitted to the Nokhyanghoe(綠香會 the association of green scent). This novel is very important in that it is related to the course of Soon-mo’s life and it is in line with the subject that the writer wanted to express. Second, I have identified the relationships between Ellen Key and the narrative formation of Great Mother. I found out many parts which tell the unity of body and soul in Ellen Key’s theory of free love: the love between Soon-mo and Sang-chul and its influence on the course of their love, the process of her parents and brother’s active cooperating in raising Soon-mo’s illegitimate son Chul-jin and protecting her motherhood in the novel. It seems that author LEE Tae-jun even used Ellen Key’s theory as an narrative for Soon-mo. This novel also sets the direction of Soon-mo’s life by linking it to the agony of women before and after pregnancy-delivery, the maternal discourses of the editors of magazine New Women. reflecting the context of the early 1920s.
