근대 전환기 궁궐에 유입된 프랑스식 실내장식과 가구

French furniture and interior style in palaces at turning points of the Korean Modern Age: Around Donduckjeon Hall in the Deoksugung Palace and Daejojeon Hall in Changdeokgung Palace

본고는 근대 전환기 궁궐 내 프랑스식 실내장식의 경향을 착목하여 일본의 선례와 비교하여 그 양상을 살폈다. 일본의 경우 일본식 전통 전각에 프랑스 가구를 들인 화양절충 양식의 궁전을 필두로 프랑스식 양관은 대부분 가타야마 도쿠마의 설계에 따른 것이다. 조선 건축에 있어서 가타야마의 영향은 간접적이지만 조선의 궁궐 내에서 발견되는 프랑스식 실내장식과 가구는 당시 유럽의 역사주의 건축 및 실내장식의 경향과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 궁궐에 프랑스식 문화를 소개한 손탁은 돈덕전과 같은 프랑스식 실내장식에도 관여했을 가능성이 있다. 궁궐 내에서 사용된 가구에 붙어 있는 레이블을 통해 일부 가구에서 그 소장처를 확인할 수 있다. 돈덕전에서 사용된 상당수의 가구는 이후 창덕궁 대조전과 희정당에 이관, 배설되었다. 돈덕전 내부는 프랑스 루이 16세 양식을 비롯하여 섭정기, 루이 15세, 그리고 르네상스 양식과 같은 여러 양식이 혼재되었을 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 양상은 일본인 청부업체의 주도로 꾸며진 창덕궁 대조전 일곽의 실내장식 경향에서 더욱 두드러지게 나타난다.

This study focuses on French furniture and interior style in Korean palaces as compared with Japanese examples. In Japan, French-style interiors were executed mostly by Katayama Toukuma starting with the traditional architecture and buildings entirely decorated in French style. Although Katayama’s influence in Korea is indirect, the French furniture and interior style in Korean palaces is closely related to the historicism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. French culture was introduced by Lady Sontag, who was involved with French tableat court and might have influenced the French-style interior in palaces as well. Some pieces of furniture kept in the National Palace Museum of Korea and Changdeokgung Palace bear labels indicating the name of the palace that they were placed in. Some had originally been used at Donduckjeon in the early 20th century and moved into Changdeokgung later on. Donduckjeon was decorated with mixtures of Louis XVI, Régence, Louis XV, and Renaissance styles. This aspect clearly emerges in the interior of Changdeokgung, decorated by Japanese contractors.
