A Study on the Strength Properties of Aluminum Alloy according to the Variation of Tool Rotation Speed of Friction Stir Welding

  • 15

This paper investigated the effect of the change in the rotational speed of a friction-crossing tool of aluminum 6061 alloy, on the tensile strength of welds; the material used in the experiment was rolled sheet metal with a thickness of 2 mm. In the experimental conditions, the rotation speed of the tool was fixed to 100 mm/min and the rotation speed of the tool was increased by 500 rpm from 1000 rpm to 4000 rpm for welding. Tensile testing of the welds resulted in fracture in the as region under all conditions. The tensile strength of the welds was more than 70% of the tensile strength of the parent metal under most conditions. At 2500 rpm, the tool had the highest tensile strength value of 80% relative to the parent steel.
