An Analysis of the Meaning of Particles UP/OUT in Phrasal Verbs based on Middle School English Textbooks

The purpose of this study is to analysis the meaning of phrasal verbs UP/OUT from middle school English textbooks based on Park(2012) and Collins(2002), which suggested the various meanings of particles UP/OUT in phrasal verbs. This study analysis the meaning of phrasal verbs with combination of verbs and particles UP/OUT presented in the main text of a total of 37 middle school English textbooks which is revised in 2015 and 2009 based on the meaning classification of particles UP/OUT. To analysis of collected data based on Park(2012) and Collins(2002), the Hangle program is used. In conclusion, first, the particle UP which combines with the verb can be seen the extended various meanings in addition to the core meanings in the physical and in active areas of abstract domain and in the inactive areas abstract domain in the main text of the middle school English textbooks. However, there were no examples of replenishment and dismantle in the physical domain and no examples of supplementation in active area of abstract domain. In addition, no examples were found of separation, removal, closure, consumption, failure in inactive area of abstract domain. Second, the results of the analysis of the meaning of the particle OUT in the middle school English textbooks appear the core meanings with the extended meaning. The extended meaning in addition to core meaning can be found in the physical domain, in active area such as find out in abstract domain and inactive area in abstract domain such as give up . Through the study various phrasal verb examples of the extended meaning as well as the core meaning should be presented in middle school English textbooks, so that English learners can develop the learning ability to infer contextual meaning in sentences which contained phrasal verbs.
