A paired oral test may have a lot of advantages, but it may have problems in terms of test validity because test-takers may have impact on each other’s performance. Hence, this study examined the effects of assertiveness and self-confidence on test-taker performance in a paired oral test. 147 students at a Korean university were paired according to the level of assertiveness and selfconfidence and required to take a paired oral test. Revised NEO personality inventory was used to determine the level of assertiveness. Their scores from the test were analyzed using ANCOVA. As a result, it was found that 1) test-takers who had higher assertiveness or self-confidence tended to perform better, but assertiveness and self-confidence did not significantly influence test-taker s own performance in the paired oral test 2) both lower and higher test-takers performed better when paired with a higher self-confident test-taker, suggesting interlocutor’s self-confidence has impact on performance in the test.
