The purpose of the study is to analyze Korean learner’s use of demonstratives such as this, that and it. English demonstrative system plays a role of referring information when interlocutors involved in making a certain context in their language use. Understanding this system can be one of the important elements to achieve native-like proficiency among ESL/EFL learners. For this reason, Korean learners’ essays are analyzed to find out particular patterns of demonstrative use on the basis of Strauss’ Focus Model Theory. This model presents a degree of attention between hearers and speakers when they refer facts or events from the continuum perspective. For this end, Koran learners’ use of demonstratives is classified into Endophora (Anaphora, Cataphora) and Exophora, and analyzed through the Focus Model. The results show that Anaphora, it, is the most frequent demonstrative among other two, and also this phenomenon can be interpreted as Korean learners use a low degree of attention in the referring information. Particularly, this as an Exophora is often used with a direct quotation when referring information beyond the text.
