Perry Miller contended that while Edwards abandoned the covenant scheme, his Puritan predecessors were advocates of federal theology, which is quite different from Calvin’s theology. On the contrary, the close relationship between the church and government we have outlined in the thought of Edward bears a striking resemblance to his Puritan forebears. In Edwards’ thought, although there is a distinction between the church and nation, both are considered as organic whole in terms of redemptive history. As in the case of New England in 18th century, the implication of national covenant rests on its context-its geographical, political, and cultural consideration in rather than on a set of preconceived theological premise in the scholars mentioned above. The example of the covenant in John Winthrop’s and Edwards’ sermons in the form of jeremiad demonstrates that Edwards’ understanding of national covenant avoids potential tensions between the church and the state, but demonstrates the inherent unity between them. The same is true for the reading of Edwards’s civil law, which has several implications for redemptive history. Not only does civil law serves the church worship, but it also functions as part of the history of redemption.
