필자는 다니엘서와 요한계시록에 대한 분석을 통해 다니엘 7:25, 12:7, 요한계시록 12:14에 사용된 “한 때와 두 때와 반 때”라는 표현이 하나님의 백성이 경험할 환난의 때를 가리키는 전문 용어이며 상징적 용어라고 결론 내린다. 그리고 다니엘서에 기록된 이와 유사한 여러 표현들은(8:14의 “이천 삼백 주야”, 12:11의 “일천 이백 구십일”, 12:12의 “일천 삼백 삼십 오일”) 안티오커스 에피파네스에 의해 가해진 유대인 핍박이라는 역사적 사건을 가리키는 대략적인 숫자들로 사용되었다고 주장한다(네 번째 짐승을 로마로 해석하거나 작은 뿔을 데살로니가후서 2:3의 적그리스도로 해석하는 것에 반대하여). 그리고 요한계시록에서 요한은 이 다니엘의 표현들에 영향을 받아, 교회 시대 전체에 걸쳐 있게 될 환난의 때를 가리키기 위한 자신의 전문적이고 상징적 용어들을(계 11:3, 12:6의 “일천 이백 육십 일”과 11:2, 13:5의 “마흔 두달”) 만들었다(문자적 접근에 반대하여). 요한계시록에 사용된 이 용어들은 이 환난의 때를 가리키는 동시에 하나님께서 이 극심한 핍박의 시기에 하나님의 말씀을 세상에 증언하기 위해 당신의 교회를 보호하시는 기간으로도 묘사되었다고 제안한다.
Through the examination of the book of Daniel and Revelation, I conclude that “a time, times and half a time” in Daniel 7:25, 12:7, Revelation 12:14 is a technical and symbolic term indicating a time of tribulation to God’s people. I also contend that Daniel’s several similar expressions (“2300 evenings and mornings” in 8:14, “1290 days” in 12:11, “1335 days” in 12:12) were written as round numbers to refer to Antiochus Epiphanes’ persecution of the Jews (against the views of Rome for the fourth beast and of the antichrist figure in 2 Thess 2:3 for the little horn). I also suggest that influenced by these Daniel’s expressions, John created his own technical and symbolic terms (“1260 days” in Rev 11:3, 12:6 and “42 months” in 11:2, 13:5) to refer to the time of tribulation through the entire church age (against the literal approach). In Revelation, this period is also described as the period when God protects his church in order to testify his word to the world in the time of severe persecution.
