MySassyGirl is a Hollywood remake of Korean movie, 엽기적인 그녀 [That Bizarre Girl], released in 2008, a filmic adaptation of on-line Korean novel. Unlike its mega-hit of the original Korean movie in South Korea, the remake failed to achieve commercial success in both the US and South Korea. In an attempt to explain critical factors of such ‘mild’ reception, this study explores to what extent the original movie has been transposed or proximated for the target audience, and how the Korean audience has received the remake through translation, from a perspective of audience reception. Based on a comparative analysis of the original Korean movie and its remake in Hollywood, and a survey, this study aims to investigate the impacts of adaptation and translation on audience reception.
