A Critical Review of the Feminist Research in Studies in British and American Language and Literature

This paper reviews the feminist literary researches of sixty years in Studies in British and American Language and Literature. The key concerns of the research are since when the local academic journal has been interested in feminism and what issues and literary works it has mainly dealt with. This review is partly a result of recent arguments around misogyny, gender discrimination, and ‘# Me Too’ movement in South Korea. Emerged from the long Western history of women’s movements, feminism has changed literary practices as well as every aspect of human lives. Since mid-1990s when feminist studies vigorously began surrounding English academia in South Korea, there have been a lot of feminist literary works and practices. These days the focus of the research has been extended from ‘the established gender identity’ to ‘differences between women’ and ‘alterity,’ appropriating Western feminist theoretical trend. Feminist criticism might be one of the tools which make people understand the world better and also make literary studies meaningful to our own lives.
