The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of reading tasks on the realization of prosodic phrasing and phrase tones in the utterances of Korean learners of English. Previous studies have emphasized the importance of acquiring appropriate prosodic phrasing and intonation patterns in learning English as L2. The current study addressed the question of whether repeated reading tasks helped Korean learners of English to achieve better understanding of phrasing and edge tones including boundary tones and phrase accents. The participants used fewer intermediate phrases and more L-L% at the end of intonational phrases after listen-and-repeating utterances of English native speakers. These findings suggested that Korean learners of English tended to exhibit significant improvements in prosodic phrasing and phrase tones of intonational phrases through reading tasks, which would trigger more effective communication in English.
