This essay has touched on how Tennyson’s In Memoriam showed the clash between science and religion and tried to find a reconciliation between doubt and faith. Since Tennyson was well-known for his interest in science and for his poetic engagement with it, many recent critics lean rather more toward scientific analysis than literary exploration. However, it is significantly more important to remember that, as a poet laureate, Tennyson put great effort into reconciling science and religion interacting with the growth of science. This essay not only attempts to analyze the various dialogues of the poem in terms of Victorian intellectual and cultural contexts but also tries to point out his attitudes towards science and religion. Indeed, Tennyson was a representative of Victorians who faced confusion and his poem, In Memoriam, has a message of reassurance for faith and hope.
