『중용』의 分節과 分章을 둘러싼 편제의 정합적 연구

A Study on the Consistency on the Syntax of Chapters and Sections of the Zhongyong

『중용』은 『대학』 『논어』 『맹자』와 함께 四書로 불린다. 이는 『중용』이 유학을 이해하는 중요한 문헌이라는 점을 나타낸다. 이 글에서는 『중용』의 분절과 분장의 편제를 둘러싼 다양한 논의를 검토하고 八大節說을 주장하고자 한다. 텍스트의 편제는 단어와 문장을 어디에 끊고 어디까지 이어서 읽느냐를 밝히는 구문론에 한정되지 않고 그 의미를 밝히는 의미론과 밀접하게 관련된다. 편제가 제대로 되지 않으면 의미의 연관성이 있는 문장을 별개의 문장으로 분리할 수도 있고 연관성이 없는 문장을 하나의 문장으로 연결시킬 수도 있다. 이런 점에서 朱熹의 『중용』 편제는 후대에 지대한 영향을 끼치기도 했지만 텍스트를 오독할 수 있는 우려를 낳기도 했다. 이 글에서는 정합적 편제와 내재적인 의미 분석을 통해 『중용』의 원의를 최대한으로 밝히려고 한다.

Zhongyong is one of Four Books(四書) along with the Daxue, the Analects, and the Mencius. This indicates that the medium is an important literature of understanding Confucianism. In this article, I am going to review various discussions surrounding the syntax of sections and chapters of the Zhongyong and insist on eight large sections. The compilation of text is not limited to syntax that reveals where words and sentences are broken and how far they are read continuously, but is closely related to semantics that reveal their meaning. If the syntax is not working properly, the relevant statements of meaning can be separated into other sentences, or the unrelated sentences can be combined into one sentence. In this regard, Zhuxi’s Zhongyongzhangju(中庸章句) may have had a profound impact in the future, but may also guide her to misread the text. In this article, I try to maximize the original meaning of the Zhongyong through a coherent compilation and an analysis of its immanent meaning.
