‘太極’論의 패러다임 轉換에서 드러나는 문제점과 그 해소

Interpretational difficulties And Resolutions of Taegeuk, 太極 Theory’s Paradigm Shift - Focusing on Taegeuk Theory of Zhuxi, 朱熹 and Wang Fuzhi,王夫之

이 논문에서는 周敦頤로부터 朱熹, 王夫之에 이르는 ‘태극’론을 다루었다. 이를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 오늘날 동아시아 철학을 연구하는 이들에게서 ‘태극’론은 매우 중요하다는 것이 상식으로 통하는데, 동아시아철학사에서는 11세기에 이르러 周敦頤가 『太極圖說』을 발표함으로써 비로소 부각되기 시작하였다는 점이다. 둘째, 이후 동아시아철학사에서 ‘태극’론이 주요 논제가 된 것은 『태극도설』의 저자인 주돈이의 영향력에 의한 것이라기보다는 주희의 영향력에 의한 것이었다. 그런데 주희는 주돈이의 원본 『태극도설』을 그대로 부각시킨 것이 아니라 자신의 철학적 관점인 理本論 패러다임으로 전환시켜버렸다. 그 결과 우리가 『태극도설』을 이해하는 데서 두 가지 난점을 초래하였다. 그것은 다름 아니라 ‘太極生兩儀’에서의 ‘生’ 字를 처리하는 것이 난감하다는 것과 태극이 理一體이기 때문에 ‘太極生兩儀’라 하면 ‘理生氣’라 하는 난점이 제기된다는 것이다. 이에 대한 논란이 이후 조선의 철학자들에게서 여실하게 드러났다. 셋째, 왕부지의 ‘태극’론에서는 주희에 의해 초래된 위의 두 가지 난점이 해소될 수 있다는 것이다. 주지하다시피 張載의 氣一元論을 계승하며 氣哲學을 집대성한 것으로 알려진 왕부지는, 이미 이 두 가지 난점을 의식하며 자신의 ‘태극’론을 펼치고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이상의 문제를 II, III, IV章으로 나누어 논의해 보았다.

In this study, I investigated various Taegeuk theories from Zhou Tunyi, 周敦頤; Zhuxi, 朱熹 and Wang Fuzhi, 王夫之. To begin with, until Zhou Tunyi published Taiqitushuo, 太極圖說, in eleventh century, the theory was negligence despite of the fact that this theory is undoubtedly important for scholars in modern eastern philosophy. Second, the impact of Taiqitushuo in the field was not from Zhou Tunyi, the original author, but from Zhuxi, the later interpreter. However, the interpretation of Zhuxi did not deliver the original meaning of the theory. He transformed the meaning of the theory based on his own perspectives which is libonlon, 理本論. This caused two major issues for us to understand Taiqitushuo. The first issue is that it is difficult to clarify the meaning of giving a birth, 生 in the theorem of dichotomous status in Taiqi, 太極生兩儀. The other issue is that 太極生兩儀 would be explained as li giving birth to qi, 理生氣 due to the fact that Taegeuk is a whole of lis, 理一體. These issues were revealed in scholars of Joseon. The last point of this study is that Wang Fuzhi’s Taegeuk theory could be a resolution of these issues. Wang Fuzhi argued his own explanation of Taegeuk theory by succeeding the Zhangzai’s, 張載 qi monism. Chapter two, three and four will discuss these points respectively in this study.
