Public libraries are becoming resident-friendly spaces and important regional cultural facilities that provide diverse cultural services. According to the functional changes that require diversity, the complexity of programs in public libraries is not simply an extension of existing functions with new functions, but a demand for a new space where various functions are mixed. In other words, it is possible to accommodate complex programs through the change in the interrelationship of the spatial components of public libraries. The architectural elements(openness, accessibility, connectivity) representing the publicness in public libraries and the type of spatial combination(remote, touched, connected, meshed, unified), are set as criteria for the analysis of this study. In other words, this study attempts to find out how the spaces for various functions are combined for the pursuit of publicness, and to analyze the architectural approaches in detail. In this study, Seattle Central Library is selected as the case study which proposed a new method of organizing spaces according to the complex and diverse functions of the library, and is compared to regional central libraries in Korea. As a result, although domestic public libraries are recently designed, new programming of complex spaces for the spatial composition of public libraries still needs to be accommodated. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to set up the main design guidelines for architectural spatial composition that can combine user-oriented various functions from the schematic design stage of public library construction.
