19세기 후반~20세기 초 공문서 수록 지도 연구

A Study of Maps Included in Official Documents that were Produced during the late 19th Century~early 20th Century

본 연구는 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원에 소장된 19세기 후반~20세기 초 11,000여종의 공문서에 첨부되어 있는 330매의 지도를 정리해 내용을 파악하여 지도의 유형을 분류하고, 지도의 특징을 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 지도가 수록된 공문서의 형식, 문서의 수발자, 지도 제작의 주체, 지도 표현의 양식과 형태, 지도 제작 시기 등을 기준으로 한국에 근대지도제작기술이 유입되던 시기에 제작된 지도의 특징을 파악하였다. 이들 지도가 수록된 공문서의 형식에 따라 국내관계문서에 포함된 지도와 국외관계문서에 수록된 지도로, 문서수발형태에 따라 중앙관아에서 제작한 지도·하급관아에서 상달한 지도·외국과의 관계에서 제작한 지도 등으로 분류할 수 있다. 1880년대에 최초의 개항장인 인천의 지도가 다수 제작된 것을 비롯해, 부산·원산·마산·목포 등 개항장 지도, 외국인 거류지나 조차지·조계지 범위 설정, 외국공관의 설치 및 외국세력의 이권 침탈과 관련된 지역의 지도들이 제작되었다. 또한 고종대 황권의 강화, 전기·통신시설의 설치 등 근대문물의 수용, 일본의 침략과정을 보여주는 지도들이 다수 확인되었다. 고종과 순종대에 생산된 공문서에 수록된 지도는 고종이 추진했던 근대화정책과 외국 열강의 제국주의적 침략과정을 보여준다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

Based on the 330 maps included official documents produced during the King Gojong(r. 1864-1907) and Emperor Sunjong(r. 1907-1910) period which are retained the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, this study aims at introducing and investigating the general features of the maps, contents, map producers, cartographical expressions, and map making techniques. After the establishment of diplomatic relations with western countries, in 1880s, information on western geography, geographical knowledge, map making skills, and others began flowing into Korea. This in turn brought about the discontinuation of traditional map making. In the early part of King Gojong’s reign, the majority of the maps were of Incheon of Gyeonggi province as it was an economic and cultural hub during the port opening period. However, in the process of time Busan, a port close to Japan, and the Capital city Seoul emerged as cities of attention. These maps are valuable references carrying rich information as to King Gojong’s modernization policies and the process of invasion of Korea. They show King Gojong encouraged the construction of transportation·communications·postal service facilities, and made an effort to have a close-to-reality record of the property of the Imperial Household. The maps also show the rivalries among Russia, Qing China, Japan, England, America, and France over vested economic rights in Korea.
