A Study on Type of North Korean Parents’ Educational Support after Arduous March

The purpose of this study is to analyze the actual condition of education in North Korea. It has been showing a great change since Arduous March through parent variable. To improve the objectivity and reliability of this study, a depth interview with residents escaping from North Korea was carried out, relevant data from the literature on space of North Korea was collected and domestic and foreign North Korea education-related research results were re-analyzed. Education in North Korea contributing to the maintenance and development of the North Korean regime has been completely led by authorities of North Korea. Parents, who are universally regarded as the key subject of education, had no presence in North Korean education. However, as free education system collapsed since Arduous March and parents shouldered the costs related to education, North Korean parents gained in stature. Parents in North Korea recognize education as investment for their children’s future, pursue private benefits and lead a new educational culture. They exert their influence in making various education-related decisions through irrationality of education that settled because of a structural fault in North Korean education. Their selection of schools and homeroom teachers reveals the power of consumers, which became a common custom. They are actively supporting the education of their children through bribe with regard to college entrance examination and private education. North Korean parents, who appeared as a new subject of education in North Korean education which has been monopolized by North Korea authorities’ thorough management supervision, are new variables. Thus, the analysis of North Korean parents’ educational support this study deals with will contribute to understanding the reality of North Korean education and prospecting its future.
