College Students’ Needs for Housing Information, Education and Counseling Programs

This study was aimed to explore college students’ needs for housing information, education and counseling (HIEC) programs in order to provide basic information for development and implementation of programs targeting college students. In March 2018, a questionnaire survey was conducted to students at university-A and total 300 useable responses were collected. Major findings were as follows. (1) About 12 percents of respondents were found to have experienced HIEC programs and most frequently experienced types of HIEC programs was to search written materials. (2) Most preferred topics for HIEC programs were basic knowledge on rental contract and residential move, and information of diverse housing cost assistance programs. (3) For most of topics, respondents preferred to acquire information through on- or off-line materials except for topics related to legal issues or assistance programs. (4) As for on-line source to acquire references related to housing, respondents preferred homepage of professional institutions the most followed by social network services (SNS). (5) As for housing education programs, respondents preferred one-time programs during summer or winter breaks on campus. (6) Among diverse counseling methods, respondents preferred face-to-face counseling and counseling through SNS. (6) As provider of housing HIEC programs, respondents were found to trust housing-related public institutions the most followed by national government and professional research and education institutions such as colleges.
