The Persecution of Christianity of Nero

타키투스에 따르면 64년 로마에서 대화재가 발생하였고, 네로가 그가 불을 냈다는 소문을 잠재우기 위해서 기독교 신자들을 박해하였다. 그런데 타키투스는 기독교 신자들이 ‘방화죄’로 체포되어, ‘인류 혐오죄’로 처벌되었다고 모순된 진술을 하고 있다. 이 논문은 타키투스의 진술이 깊이 있게 분석되지 않고 피상적으로 읽히면서 네로의 기독교 박해가 정확하게 파악되지 않았다는 문제를 제기하였다. 그리고 로마의 화재와 기독교 박해가 관계가 있었는지, 인류 혐오죄의 내용이 무엇이었는지를 중심으로 네로 박해의 원인과 성격을 파악하고자 노력하였다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 로마의 화재와 네로의 기독교 박해 사이에 직접적인 연관은 없었다. 타키투스를 제외한 다른 자료들, 즉 수에토니우스와 기독교 교부들 누구도 두 사건을 연계하지 않았다. 타키투스가 두 사건을 연계시켰던 것은 네로의 기독교 박해가 대화재 직후에 진행되었고, 네로가 로마의 대화재 직후에 조성되었던 민심의 불안을 잠재우기 위해서 기독교 박해를 이용하고 있다는 소수 의견이 있었기 때문이었다. 기독교 신자들이 인류 혐오죄라는 죄목으로 처벌되었던 것은 로마의 대화재 이후 민심이 불안한 시기임에도 불구하고, 기독교 신자들이 적극적으로 선교 활동을 펼쳤기 때문이다. 로마의 기독교도들은 가까운 시기에 종말이 올 것이라고 예언하면서, 로마인의 일상 생활과 종교 생활을 공격적으로 비판하였다. 이로 인해서 기독교도와 다신교도들 사이에 충돌이 발생하자, 네로는 기독교에 대해서 조사하도록 명령하였다. 조사 결과 로마 정부는 기독교를 사악한 미신이라고 규정하고 처벌하였다.

According to the common sense Nero persecuted Christians to put an end to the rumor that the devastating fire in Rome in 64 was ordered by him. This claim is based on the statement of Tacitus. But only Tacitus related the fire to the persecution of Nero. The ancient writers including the Christians leaders did not mention the two facts together. Furthermore Tacitus conceded that the Christians were convicted not of the incendiarism but the hatred of human race. Therefore we must reconsider the relation of the fire and the persecution of Nero. I tried to reexamine the statement of Tacitus on the persecution of Nero. As a result, the following results were obtained. There is no direct liaison between the fire and the persecution of Nero. If there were any association between the fire and the persecution of Nero, the ancient authors including Christian writers should have mentioned it. The fact that Suetonius, Dio Cassius, Clemens and others did not mention it showed the reason of the persecution was not the arson. Nevertheless we should find out the reason why Tacitus connected the two incidents. When there were severe unrest among the citizens of Rome after the fire, Nero persecuted the Christians. Nero persecuted the Christians cruelly and savagely. Several Romans regarded the act of Nero as an attempt to distract the attention of Roman from the fire. Tacitus felt sympathy with their opinion. So Tacitus stated that Nero persecuted the Christians put an end to the rumor that the devastating fire in Rome in 64 was ordered by him. The Christians were convicted of the hatred of human race. Why the Christians were persecuted? When the citizens of Rome had been suffered from hardships after the fire, the Christians of Rome did not stop their missionary activities. Particularly they maintained that the end of world was very imminent. Some Romans who got angry with the acts of the Christians accused them. Investigating the Christians, Nero and the authorities regarded the Christians as an ‘evil superstition’. This is the main reason why Nero persecuted the Christians.
