Evolution of Western Perspective on Life’s Origin since Origin of Species

찰스 다윈의『종의 기원』 이후 서구 사회에서 생명의 기원에 대한 관점의 변화 역사가 과학 지식의 해석에 대한 사회적 환경의 영향에 강조점을 두고 간략히 제시된다. 다윈주의 혁명 이후 생명에 대한 새로운 과학적 발견과 이어 나온 생명의 기원에 대한 가설은, 과학적 진보에 따라서 생명의 개념이 크게 변화해 왔음에도 불구하고, 압도적으로 과학적 유물론과 자연주의의 관점에서 제시되어 왔음이 지적된다. 생명의 기원의 신비를 풀어줄 것으로 기대됐던 1953년의 밀러-유리 실험과 DNA 화학구조의 규명 이후 생명의 기원을 설명하는데 있어서의 어려움이 세포내 단백질과 DNA 속에 있는 생물학적 정보가 어떻게 그 구성요소들로부터 만들어질 수 있는지와 관련하여 논의된다. 최초 생명의 생물학적 정보를 설명하는데 있어서 자연주의적 가설들의 거듭된 실패는 생명의 기원의 신비를 심화시켰을 뿐만 아니라 최근 지적설계론과 같은 비자연주의적인 설명이 대안적 설명으로 부상하게 만들었다는 것이 제시된다. 비록 이런 비자연주의적인 설명이 현재는 기존 과학계에 의해 과학적 설명으로 수용되고 있지 않지만, 생명의 기원에 대한 자연주의적 관점과 비자연주의적 관점 사이의 논쟁은, 사회문화적 요소의 영향과 더불어, 결국 미래의 과학적 발견에 의해 결정될 것으로 보인다.

A brief historical account of the evolution of the perspective on the origin of life since Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species in western society is presented with emphasis on influence of social environment on the interpretation of scientific knowledge. It is shown that interpretation of new scientific findings about life and subsequent proposal of the hypothesis of life’s origin since Darwinian revolution have been predominantly made from the perspective of scientific materialism and naturalism, though the conception of life has changed significantly with scientific progress since then. The difficulty in explaining the origin of life in naturalistic and materialistic ways after Miller-Urey experiment as well as the elucidation of the chemical structure of DNA in 1953 which were expected to help resolve the mystery of life’s origin is discussed in the context of how specified information in DNA and proteins could be generated from their building blocks. It is pointed out that continuing failure of naturalistic hypotheses to explain the origin of the biological information not only has deepened the mystery of the origin of life, but also provided an opportunity for non-naturalistic explanations to come to the surface as an alternative explanation for the origin of life in recent years. Although such non-naturalistic explanation is not accepted as the scientific explanation by the scientific establishment at the present time, the debate between naturalistic and non-naturalistic perspective about the origin of life appears to be determined by the future scientific discoveries as well as social and cultural factors.(Ajou University)
