The Historians’ Turning from Sectionalism to Racism in the late 19th Century

19세기 말에서 20세기 초까지 미국 역사학은 지역주의 갈등을 해소하려는 전 국가적인 요구에 충실하게 협조하게 된다. 아직 남북전쟁의 여운이 사람들의 감정을 사로잡고 있었고 그와 함께 지역마다 전쟁과 자신의 대의명분을 연결하여 당위성을 설파하고 있었다. 이러한 지역주의에 바탕을 둔 이해를 극복하기 위해서 미국의 역사학자들이 선두에 서게 된다. 그들은 미국 국민주의 역사학을 세우고 진보와 발전의 경과가 올곧이 살아있는 예외적인 역사학으로 이 국가의 과거를 설명하고 있었다. 그 과정에서 사회진화론과 인종주의는 그 시대 역사학에서 주로 적용하는 명제가 되었다. 그들은 거의 과잉이라 불릴 정도로 이런 사회과학을 남용하면서 남북의 역사학을 단결시키고 있었다. 구체적으로 남북의 역사학자들은 최근에 있었던 동족상쟁의 전쟁의 원인에서부터 재건기의 연방정부의 정책의 적절성 또한 인종주의적 시각에서 재고하는 단합된 노력을 하였다. 결국 그 과정에서 미국의 역사학은 지역주의 역사학을 벗어날 수 있었고 그 결과로 결코 용서할 수 없는 인종주의를 거리낌 없이 받아들이는 과오를 범하고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

This critical essay aims at American historians’s interesting about racism in the turn of century. At that time, Europe and American Intellectual circle was very interesting about Social Darwinism in the name of new science. And so they have used this science to replace the traditional sectional and regional American history approaches. In the 19th century, these historians have indulged their energy to explain their sectional interesting against other part of the section in the American geographical vistas. Therefore their histories never homogeneous about their national narratives. But after the Civil War and Reconstruction, Historians, mainly from eastern section, firstly have advanced not only their past fragmented national history into wholly a national integrated history and but also, as a weapon to obtain their these approaches, the enchantment of Social Darwinism. And so they have insisted racism in the alternative the sectionalism. At the turn of the century, all the historians insisted that the black are not equal to the white such qualities as intelligence, sensibility, and finally sociality, etc. Now American historians have concreted their national building programs in these way and converged and finally solved the American tragedy such as the Civil War’s legacy derived from the South and later Western animosity against the Northern.(Dongguk University)
