When East meets West: Tracing Cultural Currents in Early Iron Age Andalusia (c. 800-600 BCE)

안달루시아의 동방화 시기, 대략 기원전 800-600 년경은 문화적 상호 작용 및 교류와 관련하여 서부 지중해에 있어서 중요한 시기다. 안달루시아의 대서양과 지중해 연안에 페니키아 사람들이 이주하여 영구 정착하면서 문화적, 기술적, 사회적 변화가 일어났다. 이 지역의 다양성과 그 다양한 요소들이 혼종하여 함께 발달하며 복잡한 관계로 얽혀 안달루시아 단일 지역 자체와 이 지역의 전후 맥락만 살피는 것만으로는 해당 지역의 기본적 문화적 영향과 현재를 이해하기가 어려워졌다. 본 연구는 통계적 방법에 기초하여 안달루시아 매장지의 문화적 제휴를 파악하려는 이전의 시도를 바탕으로 한다. 선택된 접근법은 대응 분석으로 알려진 다변량 통계적 방법으로, 그 결과는 공간 중심 영역에 따라 지중해, 대서양 그리고 과달키비르강으로 명명된 세 개의 그룹으로 매장지를 분할하는 것을 제안한다. 이 세 그룹은 지중해에서 연결성이 증가하는 시기에 안달루시아에서 수렴한 다양한 문화적 흐름을 보여준다. 분석 결과는 향후 조사를 위한 출발점을 제공하며 다른 문화들이 공존하는 환경에서 외국과 본토의 이분법적 구분을 넘어서 더욱 차별화된 접근방식을 조언한다.

The Orientalizing period (c. 800-600 BCE) in Andalusia is a crucial time for the western Mediterranean in regard of cultural interactions and exchanges. The arrival and permanent settlement of Phoenician people at the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast of Andalusia spurred a process of cultural, technological and social transformations. The diversity of the local communities and the development of hybrid cultural elements created complex relations and entanglements which renders it difficult to understand the basic cultural influences and currents in the region by just looking at single sites or contexts. The present study builds on a previous attempt to grasp the cultural affiliation of the Andalusian burial sites based on statistical methods. The chosen approach is a multivariate statistical method known as correspondence analysis whose results suggest a division of the burial sites in three groups which are named according to their spatial core area as Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Guadalquivir group. These groups exemplify the diverse cultural currents that converged in Andalusia in a time of increasing connectedness in the Mediterranean. The outcome of the analysis offers starting points for future investigations and advises for a more differentiated approach beyond the dichotomic distinction of foreign and local in an intercultural environment.
