Updating Embryo Research Guidelines and Slippery Slope

This study begins with Mary Warnock s question about an attempt to expand the 14-day rule for embryo research. Warnock fears that if the 14-day rule were to be extended, it could lead to a slippery slope argument. In this regard, the issues of the 14-day rule for embryo research, and its extension are examined. In general, the slippery slope arguments warn us to be careful before taking the first step. On the other hand, this study demonstrates the slippery slope argument that has already taken the first and subsequent steps along with empirical evidences. And it analyzes the factors of slippage implicated in the first step of slippery slope phenomena into the vagueness of a key term, transfer of a principle, and the problem of moral reasoning. It then examines how these factors play a role in the discussion of the extended period of embryo research. In doing so, this study shows that even if the discussions of the extended period of embryo research are pushed to promote human good, it does not have solely advantages we may want. Finally, critically considering the state of affairs in which we are involved in a sticky sequence of consequences from the slippage, we emphasize the need for ethical reflection on the development and application of science and technology.
