외국이주민에 대한 직·간접 접촉경험이 다문화수용성에 미치는 영향

The Effects of direct or Indirect Contact Experiences with Foreigners on citizen’s Multicultural Acceptability -Mediation Effect of Threat Awareness

본 연구의 목적은 외국이주민에 대한 직·간접 접촉경험이 일반 시민의 다문화수용성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 것이다. 더불어 간접접촉 경험과 다문화수용성의 관계에서 외국이주민에 대한 위협인식의 매개효과를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 직접접촉 경험 중에서는 외국이주민을 ‘친구’로 두고 있는 경우만 유의한 영향을 미쳤고, 대중매체를 통한 간접접촉 경험 중 긍정적인 접촉경험은 모두 유의한 영향을 미친 반면, 부정적인 접촉경험은 외국인범죄자 모습만 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 간접접촉 경험의 종류별로 다문화수용성에 미치는 영향력의 크기를 비교한 결과, 대중매체에서 한국말을 잘하는 외국인, 외국인범죄자, 한국인과 화합하여 일하는 외국인근로자, 봉사활동 하는 외국인모습 순으로 영향력이 큰 것으로 나타났다. 대중매체를 통한 간접접촉 경험과 다문화수용성의 관계에서 외국이주민에 대한 위협인식은 부분매개 효과를 나타내었다. 이상의 결과를 종합해 볼 때, 일반 시민들의 다문화수용성을 높이기 위해서는 첫째, 직접적이고 적극적인 교류 기회를 가지게 되는 ‘친구’ 관계를 맺을 수 있는 직접접촉 경험 기회를 늘려주는 정책이 필요하다. 둘째, 대중매체에서 외국이주민의 긍정적 이미지 노출 기회를 늘리기 위해 사례발굴에 노력해야 한다. 셋째, 이주민에 대한 위협인식을 낮추기 위해 성인 대상 평생교육 분야의 다문화교육을 강화하고, 대중매체의 부정적 영향력을 최소화하기 위한 노력이 필요하다.

This study examines the effects of direct or indirect contact experiences with foreigners on citizen s multicultural acceptability, and analyze mediation effect of threat awareness of foreigners between indirect contact experience and multicultural acceptability. The result of this study shows that friendship among the direct contact experiences, foreigner criminals and other positive images of foreigners among the indirect contact experiences has a significant impact on multicultural acceptability. Futhermore, citizens’ threat awarness of foreigners has a partial mediation effect between indirect contact with foreigners and multicultural acceptability. Th findings suggest that we need a policy that provide opportunities to make friends with foreigners and to expose positive images of foreigners in the media. Also, multicultural education for citizens is necessary to reduce the threat awareness of foreigners.
