북간도 민족교육 선구자 규암 김약연의 활동 및 그 교육사적 의의

이 글에서는 북간도 민족교육의 선구자인 규암 김약연 선생의 활동 및 그 교육사적 의의를 조명하였다. 김약연은 20세기 초 북간도 조선인 대통령으로 알려진 인물이다. 그는 또한 독실한 기독교 신자로서 목사로서 활동하기도 하였다. 그러나 무엇보다도 그는 북간도 민족교육의 선구자였다. 김약연은 함경북도 변방에서 유학을 공부한 유학자의 신분으로 북간도에 이주하여 그곳 조선인사회의 중견인물이 되었는바 문화개척과 사회재건을 교육을 통해 실천하고자 노력하였다. 그로 말미암아 북간도는 조선인 민족교육의 요람이 되었고, 또한 북간도 조선인들의 사상적 성장의 기초가 되었으며, 훗날 북간도 지역 독립운동과 항일운동에 크게 이바지하였다. 그는 지행합일(知行合一), 수기치인(修己治人)을 몸소 실천한 교육자였고 민본주의 사상과 민족주의 사상을 북간도 민족사회 결성에서 실천하고자 한 지도자였다. 결국 유언으로 남긴 “나의 행동이 곧 나의 유언이다.”라는 말에서 알 수 있듯이, 김약연의 삶은 교육에 대한 행동과 실천으로 대부분의 자취를 남겼다. 본 연구에서는 김약연의 생애와 교육활동을 중심으로, 그가 북간도 민족교육에 이바지한 구체적인 과정을 살피고 새롭게 그의 교육사상을 조명하면서 그 교육사적 의의를 밝혔다.

This paper mainly discusses the activities of Kim Yak Yeon, the pioneer of national education in North Kando, and the significance of his educational history. Kim Yak Yeon was the leader of the North Korean people in the early 20th century. He was a priest and a faithful Christian. However, His fundamental role is the pioneer of national education in North Kando. Kim Yak Yeon, as a Confucianist in the border area of North Kando where he moved to and became the backbone of North Kando society at that time, he also committed himself to achieve cultural development and social transformation through education. Thanks to his efforts, North Kando became the cradle of Korean national education, which also became the foundation of the mature thought of Korean people in North Kando, and laid the foundation for the later Korean national independence movement and anti-Japanese movement in North Kando. He is an educator made himself an example to realize the unity of knowledge and practice and the rule of self-cultivation. He is also a instructor to realize the thought of humanism and nationalism in the National Society of North Kando. As shown in his last words “my action is my last words , made it evident that majority of his life is centered in educational action and practice.
