육악(六樂)의 교화적(敎化的) 의의

The Edifying Values of the ‘Six Musics’

본 연구는 육악(六樂)의 교화적(敎化的) 의의에 대하여 고찰하였다. 육예(六藝)는 예(禮), 악(樂), 사(射), 어(御), 서(書), 수(數)를 지칭하는 것으로, 그 중 악(樂)은 여섯 개의 악을 뜻하는 육악(六樂)이다. 이에 따라 육악이 갖는 교화적 의의를 첫째, 선왕(先王)이 악(樂)을 제작했던 이유, 둘째, 육악이 개인의 심성에 미치는 영향, 셋째, 육악을 통해 궁극적으로 이루고자 했던 목적의 세 가지 관점으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 첫 번째로 선왕(先王)이 악(樂)을 제작했던 이유는 그들의 공업(功業)과 덕(德)을 악에 담아 선왕의 덕을 널리 전하고, 악(樂)을 통해 백성의 마음을 감화시켜 선왕의 덕을 본받게 하려는 염원이 담겨있었다. 두 번째로 육악(六樂)이 개인의 심성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보면, 육악은 사람의 마음을 곧고 어질고 선량한 마음이 생기도록 하며, 선왕의 덕이 발현된 악을 통해 사람 본연의 마음인 성(性)을 회복하고 선왕의 덕을 함양함으로써 풍속의 변화를 가져오게 한다. 마지막으로 육악을 통해 궁극적으로 이루고자 했던 목적은 화(和), 즉 마음의 조화를 이루기 위함이었다. 악(樂)은 사람의 마음을 감화하게 하여 화(和)에 이르게 하는 가장 직접적이고 효과적인 방법이다. 이런 이유로 악(樂)은 이상적인 정치 지도자인 군자(君子)가 인격 완성을 위해 갖추어야 할 여섯 개의 덕목[六藝] 중의 하나로 그 가치와 의미가 확립되었으며, 이상의 세 가지 관점을 통해 육악(六樂)이 갖는 교화적 의의를 확인할 수 있다.

This study aims to explore the edifying values of the ‘Six Music(六樂)’, one of the elements in the ‘Six Arts(六藝)’. The term of ‘Six Arts’ means six values that the Kings should persue, including etiquette, music, archery, horsemanship, calligraphy and mathematics. Here, the concept of music is called ‘Six Musics(六樂)’. This study identifies the edifying values of the Six Musics in three ways. First, the purpose of producing the Six Musics was to honor achievements and virtues of kings. The king s creations of the Six Musics were driven by a desire to edify his people by developing their moralities and to promote their virtues through the Six Musics. Second, the Six Musics were taught by a virtue, a language, and a dance. In this way, the Six Musics encouraged people to have merciful minds, which could deeply affect how the people thought and change the customs of society. Third, the ultimate purpose of the Six Musics was increasing harmony in a society. The Six Musics made it possible to raise harmonious attitudes in people s minds. The Music was the best and the most effective way to change one s mind into positiveness. For this reason, the Music symbolized a virtue that a leader should have for the completion of one s personality.
