This paper explores the feasibility of employing movies as a teaching material for improving TOEIC listening ability. As there is the distinct similarity between the language features of the stage directions/dialogues in movie scripts and the language features of the listening test items in Part 1 section and Part 2 section of the TOEIC test, it can be assumed that studying English listening using movies will be helpful for English learners to develop their listening skills for the TOEIC test. Based on the principles of Ausubel’s meaningful learning theory, this study devises a simple teaching method that makes the course content meaningful and reinforces English learning. In order to investigate the effect of the teaching method on the development of English listening ability, 30 subjects participated in the experiment. According to the results, the subjects showed the more statistically significant improvement in Part 2 than in Part 1 section. Also, the result revealed that the method was beneficial only in the subject group with low-level of English proficiency. This result indicates that the additional TOEIC-oriented language inputs should be provided along with the language inputs delivered from movies.
