The Meaning of Multilayered Chronotopes in Kate Chopin’s “The Storm“ as Compared with The Awakening

케이트 쇼팽의 작품에서 폭풍과 폭풍의 탄생지인 바다는 창조와 파괴라는 양가적인 모습을 보인다. 예를 들어 『눈뜸』에서 바다는 주인공인 에드나에게 관능적 로맨스의 해방을 꿈꾸게 하는 정신적이고 존재적인 폭풍을 일으키지만, 결국에는 그녀가 바다에서 죽음과 맞닥뜨리게 되는 운명을 초래한다. 단편 「폭풍」에서도 역시 폭풍은 과거의 로맨스를 현재에 부활시키는 역할을 하면서, 여주인공인 캘릭스타에게 훨씬 더 급진적이고 강렬하게 결혼이라는 사회적 관습을 거스르는 낭만적인 관능을 깨우쳐 준다. 그렇지만 『눈뜸』과는 달리, 이 단편에서 폭풍은 캘릭스타를 파멸로 이끌지 않고, 오히려 그녀가 자신의 몸과 영혼에 대한 새로운 가능성을 간직하고, 별다른 죄의식 없이 충실하게 결혼과 가정으로 돌아가게 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 「폭풍」에서의 폭풍의 양상이 『눈뜸』과 다른 원인을, 이 단편에 잠재한 다층적인 시간과 공간에 있다고 보고, 바흐친의 크로노토프 담론에 비추어 이 다층적인 시공간에 대해 분석한다. 「폭풍」에는 길, 로맨스, 그리고 영원한 삶에 관여하는 세 가지의 크로노토프를 바탕으로, 현재와 과거 그리고 영원이라는 각기 다른 시간과 공간의 층들이 서로 조화롭게 생산적으로 공존하고 있다. 이런 다층적 시공간은 결국에는 캘릭스타의 현실 세계를 긍정적으로 확대하여, 그녀가 관능과 낭만의 가능성으로 가득한 삶을 보다 충실하게 살아가게 만든다.

In Kate Chopin’s fictional work of New Orleans, the storms and the sea have the ambivalent aspects: the sensual creator of the romantic liberation and the merciless destroyer bringing deaths and disasters. In The Awakening, the sea awakens Edna Pontellier to an existential storm by which she opens her eyes to sensuous and romantic liberation, but she is doomed to a suicidal death in the sea by the aftermath of her personal storm. In one of Chopin’s beloved short stories “The Storm,” likewise, a storm awakens, in a more radical and explosive way, Calixta to the romantic sensuality that defies strongly the social norm and morality of marriage. However, the storm in that story never demands the downfall of Calixta such as isolation and death; rather, after passing of the storm that resurrected her romance of the past, Calixta continues to lead a life of faithful marriage, while recognizing the birthright possibility of her body and soul. In order to explore this difference of the storm in “The Storm,” this essay attempts to analyze its multiple layers of time and space in terms of M. Bakhtin’s discourse of chronotope. By the three kinds of chronotopes-the road of the present, the romance of the past, and the eternity-the multiple layers of time and space coexist harmoniously, productively as well, in “The Storm.” This multilayered chronotopes of “The Storm” should enlarge the boundary of Calixta’s real world, making her faithfully to lead a life of sensuous and romantic possibility.
