Developing Demotivation Factor Scale for University Arabic Learners

This study aims to develop a demotivation factor scale suitable for Arabic learners across Korean universities. To this end, a preliminary survey was conducted on 63 Arabic learners in two Korean universities. A primary questionnaire was consisted of 59 questions over 8 factors, prepared by the analysis of the preliminary survey. As a next step, 493 Arabic learners in 7 Korean universities were picked up and surveyed with the questionnaire from the previous survey. Finally, by conducting exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability analysis of the collected questionnaire responses, the current study developed 46 questions of the following seven factors: learning difficulties and frustration experiences, teachers behaviors, textbooks and teaching materials, learning instrumentality, decreased interests and confidence of learners, competition or comparison with classmates, attitudes towards target culture and native speakers. It can be emphasized that the scale developed from this study is the first ever independent scale designed to measure demotivation of Arabic learners in Korean universities.
