A Reading of William Morris’s “Rapunzel”: A Narrative Poem of Individuation

This essay presents a study of William Morris’s “Rapunzel” from the perspective of Jung’s individuation. Morris rewrote the fairy tale, “Rapunzel,” in a poetic form of more than 300 lines, in which the focus is more on the prince’s growth as an individual than on Rapunzel’s ordeal and her liberation from it. Morris’s transformation of the fairy tale into a knight’s pursuit of something valuable and the final fulfillment thereof achieves a mythic structure of maturation, which corresponds to Jung’s notion of “individuation.” Having studied various kinds of myths, legends, and fairy tales, Jung found the structural components of the stories to resonate with various aspects of the human spirit such as consciousness, unconsciousness, and the self, and came to the conclusion that the operation of those aspects of human spirits are reflected in myths, legends, and fairy tales. For Jung, human spirit has the potential and the aspiration to be developed to the full extent, which can alternatively be described as the union of consciousness and unconsciousness or ego and anima. In Morris’s “Rapunzel,” the prince’s dream, his departure from the court, his pursuit of something valuable, and the challenges he faces during the tasks are likely to correspond to Jung’s notion of the call of unconsciousness from within and consciousness’s response to it, and the difficulty in overcoming shadow spirits. In addition, the final union of the prince and Rapunzel, their departure from the tower, and the prince s rule of the kingdom accordingly symbolize the stage of the union of consciousness and unconsciousness and the wholesome self-rule.
