An Analysis of Leadership Shifts in the Shipbuilding Industry in Korea, China and Japan

Purpose- This research empirically proves that global shipbuilding industry leadership has moved to Korea from Japan and to China from Korea in the perspective of Catch-up cycle theory. Design/methodology- The analysis was conducted using Multiple Regression Analysis. The main variables are the difference in economic growth rate, the number of employees, the productivity difference, the exchange rate between the two countries, and the international oil price. Findings- It was found from the empirical analysis on the Korea’s catch-up to Japan that particularly, the productivity gap between the two countries, and the exchange rate affected the leadership shift. It was also found from the empirical analysis on the China’s catch-up to Korea that the global oil price and the exchange rate affected the leadership shift. Research implications or Originality- The research originality of this study is that it analyzed by using macroeconomic variables without using policy variables for analysis.
