721년 툴루즈 전투와 732년 푸아티에 전투: 프랑크를 수호하다?

The Battle of Toulouse in 721? Or The Battle of Poitiers in 732?

이슬람군을 크게 격파시킨 아키텐 공 외드(Eudes)가 이끈 721년 ‘툴루즈 전투(la bataille de Toulouse)’가 아니라 732년 ‘푸아티에 전투(la bataille de Poitiers)’이다. 에스파냐 정복 후 거침없이 팽창을 시도하는 아브드 알 라만(Abd ar-Rahman)의 이슬람 군으로부터 그리스도교 공동체인 프랑크 왕국을 구원한 영웅이자 새로운 시대를 열어 갈 ‘그리스도교 전사(guerrier)’가 바로 아우스트라시아(Austrasia) 궁재 카롤루스 마르텔루스(Carolus Martellus) 였다. 732년 푸아티에 전투는 카롤루스 마르텔루스의 새로운 왕조 개창의 명분과 정당성을 제공하는 신화로 탄생했다. 신의 선택은 점점 희미해져가는 메로빙 왕가가 아니라 새롭게 빛을 발하는 카롤루스 마르텔루스였다. 732년 푸아티에 전투는 그리스도교-프랑크 왕국을 완성시켜나고자 하는 궁재 카롤루스 마르텔루스의 정치적 전략으로 탄생하였으며 이후 프랑스와 프랑스인의 정치적 결집을 끌어내는 구심점이 되었다. 본 논문에서는 732년 푸아티에 전투와 카롤루스 마르텔루스를 그리스도교-프랑크 왕국을 수호한 이상적인 정치적 모델이자 프랑스 정체성의 수원(水源)으로 의미를 부여하는 ‘신화 만들기’를 역사적으로 재조명하고자 한다.

Today, as the historic event for making constantly the french identity, it is not the battle of Toulouse in 721 but that of Poitiers in 732 by fighting against the Islamic invasions and protecting the christianism from Islam. After the conquest of Spain, the Islamic forces, led by Abd ar-Rahman, made an attempt to expand their power to Aquitaine in the 8th century. But, Eudes, Duke of Aquitaine, could not hold them in check by himself in spite of his excellent victory in the battle of Toulouse. So, Eudes asked Carolus Martellus, major domus of Austrasia, to defeat their enemy. It was Carolus Martellus who was the hero and Christian warrior to open the new era. In this time, the battle of Poitiers in 732 became the myth for offering the justification and legitimacy to bear Carolingian Dynasty by Carolus Martellus. In other words, it was not the failing Merovingian Dynasty but starting Carolus Martellus that was chosen by God. Moreover, the battle of Poitiers in 732, born to accomplish the Christian-Frank Kingdom, took the place of pivot to concentrate the French political attention to this day. In this article, we have the chance to reflect the myth of battle of Poitiers in 732 not only as an ideal political type for the Christian-Frank Kingdom but also the source of French identity.
