아랍시사만평에 나타난 유럽 내 이슬라모포비아 현상 연구

A Study on ‘Islamophobia’ Phenomenon in Europe as Depicted in Arab Editorial Cartoons

본 연구는 유럽 내 反이슬람, 反무슬림 혐오 즉 ‘이슬라모포비아’현상을 연구하고자 한다. 이슬라모포비아는 이슬람에 대한 두려움 또는 혐오를 의미하며 2001년 9.11테러 이후 촉발되어 유럽 각지에서 발생한 다양한 테러사건들이 주요 원인으로 보이지만, 사실은 유럽과 메나지역 국가들 간의 중세기부터 시작된 오랜 역사 속에서 식민지 역사를 거쳐 오늘날에 이르렀다고 보고 있다. 아랍의 시각에서 이슬라모포비아는 인종차별의 한 종류로서, 유럽의 경제 위기, 물가, 실업, 이민자 통합정책의 실패, 보수 우파 및 극우 정당의 선거 전략을 위한 의도적인 무슬림 때리기, 미디어의 부정적이고 과장된 보도 등 매우 복잡한 요소들이 얽혀 있다. 본 연구는 유럽 내 이슬라모포비아 현상에 대하여 연구하며 특히 아랍시사만평 등의 자료를 활용하여 아랍 언론의 관점에서 조명해보고자 한다.

This study investigates the anti-islamic and anti-Muslim sentiment of hatred that has swept Europe referred to as Islamophobia. Islamophobia is defined as fear or hatred toward Muslims that was triggered by the September 11th terrorist attack on World Trade Center in 2001 and escalated due to a series of terrorist attacks throughout Western European nations blamed on aggressive Islamic organizations. Actually, there were reports of such feeling of animosity in Europe and MENA countries dating as far back as the Middle Age, having continued till the present after the period of colonialization. Meanwhile, Islamophobia is viewed by Arabic nations as a form of racial discrimination caused by a number of inter-related factors including: unprecedented economic crisis in Western Europe, inflation and massive layoffs in the wake of the economic debacle, failure of Migrant Integration Policy, Muslim bashing used by extreme conservative rightist parties as a campaign strategy, negative descriptions of muslim by the western media. This study investigated Islamophobia in Europe by analyzing editorial cartoons in Arabic newspapers and shed light on this phenomenon from the Arabic media s viewpoint.
