Concept and Direction of Social Justice Education

본고는 한국교육계의 다양한 불평등, 부정의, 갈등의 현실에서 자유롭고 평등하며 배려하는 사회정의교육이 필요하다는 배경에서, 사회정의교육의 개념을 밝히고 사회정의교육의 방향을 큰 틀에서 제시하고자 한다. 본고는 사회정의가 어떤 특정한 관점과 주장으로만 실현될 수 없는 복합적·종합적인 이상이므로 사회정의교육의 개념은 다양한 이론과 관점을 종합하여야 한다고 본다. 따라서 본문에서는 먼저 사회정의와 관련된 다양한 이론들을 종합한 후 이를 바탕으로 핵심 준거를 도출하고 이에 근거하여 사회정의교육의 개념을 정의한다. 본고는 근본적으로 사회정의교육은 분배, 인정, 대표의 원리가 조화되고, 각종 소외와 불평등의 현실에 대한 비판적 의식, 개개인의 자율적 판단과 합리적인 합의, 공동체의 가치와 사회적 책무성의 인식, 다문화적 가치의 인식, 국제 문제에 대한 연대의식과 글로벌 시민의식이 조화되어야 함을 제시하며, 이 다섯 가지 핵심방향을 중심으로 구체적인 사회정의교육의 내용과 방법을 논의한다.

In the background of the need for free, equal and caring social justice education in the face of the various realities of inequality, injustice and conflict existing in Korean society and education circles, this study aims to unveil the concept of social justice education and present the direction of social justice education in a large context. The original position is that social justice is a complex and comprehensive ideal that cannot be realized only by any particular point of view and argument, so the concept of social justice education must combine various theories and perspectives. This study examines theories related to social justice and tries to define a comprehensive concept of social justice education based on them. This study defines social justice education as a process and foundation for achieving social justice, a harmonious pursuit of justice of distribution, recognition and representation, a rational and autonomous view of society s injustice and inequality, and a comprehensive cultivation of social responsibility, multi-cultural and global ecological consciousness. In this regard, this study shows that social justice education should be basically harmonized with distribution, recognition, representative principles, and should enhance five core abilities; 1) critical consciousness of the reality of various alienation and inequality, 2) individual self-judgment and reasonable agreement, 3) recognition of community values and social responsibility, 4) recognition of multicultural values, and 5) solidarity with international issues, and global citizenship.
