미국 시장에서의 승용차 수출경쟁력의 변화

Changes in Export Competitiveness of Passenger Cars in the US Market

본 연구에서는 2008년 세계금융위기와 2012년 한‑미 FTA 발효를 전후로 미국시장에서 주요 자동차 생산 국가들의 승용차 수출경쟁력의 변화에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다. 산업내무역지수(Grubel‑Lloyd Index)와 수출경합도(ESI)를 이용한 경쟁 지수 및 현시비교우위(RCA), 무역특화지수(TSI), 국가별 비교우위(CAC) 등의 비교우위지수를 사용하여 시간의 흐름에 따른 경쟁력의 변화를 분석하였다. 한국무역협회(KITA)의 무역통계 자료를 이용한 실증분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미국 자동차 시장에서 각국의 산업 내 무역 규모는 상당한 차이를 나타내고 있다. 둘째, 한국은 경쟁 국가들과 가장 강한 수출경합도를 나타내고 있다. 셋째, 현시비교우위에 있어서 일본, 한국, 독일이 가장 높은 값을 나타내고 있고 스웨덴과 영국이 뒤를 잇고 있다. 넷째, 주요 7개 국가는 전부 미국에 대하여 강한 수출특화를 유지하고 있다. 다섯째, 한국, 이탈리아, 스웨덴은 CAC가 2.0을 훨씬 상회하는 높은 국가별 비교우위를 나타내고 있으며, 프랑스는 TSI를 제외하고는 전반적으로 뚜렷한 비교열위를 보이고 있다. 전반적으로 한국은 미국 자동차 시장에서 가장 강한 수출 경합관계를 나타내고 있고 또한 높은 수준의 비교우위를 유지하고 있다. 한국의 자동차 기업들은 중대형 고급 승용차의 개발과 수출시장 다변화를 통하여 수익성과 경영 안정성을 높일 필요가 있다고 판단된다.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to find the dynamic patterns of export competitiveness of passenger cars in the US market around the global economic crisis of 2008 and the Korea‑US FTA enactment of March 2012. Research design, data, methodology : This paper analyzes dynamic intra‑industry trade, export similarity index, and key export competitiveness indices of major countries for 2003 to 2018 as an empirical study using trade data of the Korea International Trade Association(KITA). Results : We find the following main results. First, the levels of intra‑industry trade vary widely across the countries. Second, Korea shows the highest level of competition in the US car market. Third, Japan, Korea and Germany maintain high levels of RCA, followed by Sweden and the UK. Fourth, all the countries show very strong export specialization against the US. Fifth, Korea, Italy and Sweden carry a high level of CAC well over 2.0. France maintains noticeable comparative disadvantage in the US car market. Conclusions : Korean automobile companies need to develop high‑end mid to large class passenger cars and diversify export markets other than the US and Europe in order to enhance profitability and operational stability.
