Relationships between Major Satisfaction and Career Decision-making Efficacy by Basic Vocational Competency in College Students Majoring in Cosmetology

This study attempted to provide basic data for career guidance after investigating differences between major satisfaction and career decision-making efficacy by basic vocational competency. Developing curriculums based on such basic vocational competencies needed for handling cosmetology duties and searching for a way to enhance major satisfaction and career decision-making efficacy against 296 college students majoring in cosmetology. For this, differences among basic vocational competency, major satisfaction and career decision-making efficacy by cosmetology field were analyzed. In basic vocational competency, skincare/nail art/makeup major was greater than hairdressing major in terms of communication skills, interpersonal competency, problem-solving ability and cosmetology skills. In terms of major satisfaction, on the contrary, hairdressing/skincare/makeup/nail art major was relatively high. In addition, career decision-making efficacy was relatively high in skincare/makeup major (p<.01). According to analysis of correlations among basic vocational competency, major satisfaction and career decision-making efficacy, communication skills (p<.001), interpersonal competency (p<.001), problem-solving ability (p<.001) and cosmetology skills (p<.001) revealed a positive correlation with major satisfaction and career decision-making efficacy with statistical significance. In addition, a positive correlation was found between major satisfaction (p<.001) and career decision-making efficacy with statistical significance.
