Analysis of Educational Needs for Basic Competencies in Aesthetic Cosmetology Using National Competency Standards (NCS): Focusing on industrial workers

  • 105

This study attempted to set priorities for aesthetic job-related education by analyzing the awareness of the need for foundation competency education and educational needs among aesthetic salons. In terms of research methods and procedures, a survey was performed among graduates from the Department of Aesthetic Therapy of ‘G’ College, who have worked for at least 5 years as managers and owners at 60 different salons. Through analysis of previous studies on foundational competencies and development and application of a questionnaire which uses 10 different national competency standards (NCS)-based foundational competency units, the related data were collected and measured. For analysis of educational needs and priorities, this study adopted the locus for focus model (LfFM) to improve the limitations of the t-test through which statistical differences are only confirmable. This model suggests the coordinates of foundation competency units on the four quadrant model, which has ‘average of differences between the required and current levels’ at the cross of the horizontal (required level) and vertical (current level) axes. The results found that awareness of the need for foundational competency education was higher as work experience, job title, size of business and awareness of the NCS increased. According to priority analysis, ‘communication ability’ was the highest, followed by ‘international relationship ability’ and ‘information ability’. Therefore, it is concluded that there is a need for developing courses with a high priority.
