북한이탈여성의 한국 정착 경험에 대한 사례연구

A Case Study on the Settlement Experience of North Korean Refugee Women in South Korea

본 연구의 목적은 북한이탈여성의 탈북 이전의 삶, 중국 등 제3국에서의 탈북과정, 한국 정착과정에서의 어려움을 조사함으로써, 북한이탈여성의 삶의 질 향상을 위한 함의를 도출하는 것이다. 이를 위해 북한이탈여성 5명을 대상으로 심층면담을 수행하고 사례분석을 진행하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 탈북 이전 북한에서의 삶의 경험은 ‘굶주림과 빈곤의 대물림’, ‘사별과 이산가족’, ‘강제수용소 생활’의 세 가지 차원으로 나타났다. 둘째, 연구 참여자들이 탈북 후 중국을 경유하는 과정에서 인신매매, 매매혼, 성폭력 등 위험에 쉽게 노출되었다. 셋째, 연구에 참여한 북한이탈여성들의 한국 정착 후 삶의 경험은 ‘북한이탈주민에 대한 사회적 편견 및 차별과 싸우고 경제적 어려움을 극복하고 가족과의 단절을 경험하는 과정’으로 요약할 수 있다. 넷째, 심층인터뷰 내용에 대한 범주화 분석을 토대로 공통으로 도출된 주제는 ‘탈북은 가족의 굶주림 해결을 위한 유일한 방법’, ‘인간의 기본권과 맞바꾼 탈북과정’, ‘한국 사회 적응은 현재진행형’의 3가지로 요약되었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 북한이탈여성의 한국 정착 후 삶의 질 향상을 위한 사회복지 제언을 논의하였다.

This study explores the life experience in North Korea, the escape process in a third country and settlement experience in South Korea for North Korean refuge women. For this we interviewed five North Korean refugee women settled in South Korea recruited via purposeful sampling. For the qualitative case study, we collected data through in-depth individual interviews. Key findings are as follows. First, the experiences of North Korean refugee women symbolized as ‘starvation and poverty passed on to the next generation’, ‘bereavement and dispersed family’, ‘living on detention camp’. Second, interviewees passed through China during the defection process, and were exposed to diverse risks such as human trafficking, bride-buying, and sexual violence. Third, we can summarize the experiences of the North Korean refugee women interviewees as ‘the process of overcoming social prejudice and discrimination against North Koreans, economic hardships and family breakdown’. Next, we can deduce three main themes through thematic analysis as ‘the defection is the only way to solve hunger’, ‘buying escape from North Korea in exchange of basic human rights’, ‘a constant struggle adjusting to South Korea’. Implications for social work practice and policy follow based on the study findings.
